I am a descendant of people who were moved out of their home countries in hopes of more opportunities and safety, for the generations to come. The Pacific coast and San Gabriel mountains, where the smell of salt and dirt mixed in the air, were the lands that raised me. I am the smell of Sicilian gravy, including tomatoes, onions, oregano, parsley, rosemary, basil, and thyme marinating for two days. I am the sound of big belly laughter at large family gatherings, the type of laughter that makes you start crying. My family, my ancestors, the land, and all of her beings that live here, as well as the unspoken somatic experiences we share, guide my work as a counselor and anti-oppressive educator. My name is Alexandria Elizabeth Capraro
Alexandria “Alex” Capraro (She/her)
I am so honored that you have arrived here.
My name is Alex Capraro (She/her) and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Poulsbo, WA. I received my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of North Texas with an emphasis in play therapy. As a somatic, holistic therapists, I incorporate a mind, body, and soul connection. I practice from a Gestalt perspective where relationships and connection are the upmost importance for personal growth and self-awareness. My hope is for you to have an embodied experience that is different than in typical relationships you might experience. I want to walk alongside you and I want you to know you are not alone in this journey.
In therapy I take non-traditional routes, such as sand tray, expressive arts, dancing mindfulness, nature based therapy, and equine assisted therapy. I incorporate breath work through either visual guided meditations or reminding you to just breathe. I utilize my own self as a therapeutic modality through my own tone of voice and body language. Relationships are just so crucial to this journey and I want to offer not only words to give you comfort, but my presences as well.
Now that you know a little bit about who I am in the therapy room, I wanted to share a little bit about me. I’m originally from Southern California, moved to New Mexico for my undergraduate, and then to Texas for my Master’s. I struggled with my biracial identities as I didn’t feel like I quiet fit in with my predominantly white counseling program as a first generation Colombiana, while also feeling too white to be connected within Latinx communities. I’ve also felt this struggle in queer spaces as a bisexual whose had predominately male partners. I understand this struggle of having two feet into different communities. I’ve had my own struggles with secure attachment and experiences of healthy relationships. I label myself a survivor of domestic violence and hold a special place in my soul for those on that path. I’ve also struggled with my own experiences of religious trauma and have leaned into the practice of shedding beliefs that no longer serve me. All this to say I am human and have had my own experiences of healing and growth and wanted to share these aspects of myself with you so you don’t feel “othered” as you start the therapy journey.
In 2020, I felt an initial internal calling to draw closer to the mountains and moved to Colorado to pursue my doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision. While I found sanctuary in moving to the mountains, I felt an external call from the salt water to move to Washington. My fiancé, our two dogs, and I moved to Poulsbo in May of 2024.
